At the present time, the centre of the construction boom is undoubtedly Dubai. In the hotel sector alone there are plans to build 150 more hotels over the next five to seven years, expanding the number of hotel rooms from 20,000 in 1990 to 55,000.

Other new projects underway in Dubai are the $2 billion Dubai International Financial Centre, a huge office complex rumored to include a major skyscraper; the $2.5 billion expansion of the Dubai International Airport; the $3 billion Palm Island project; $1.6 billion Dubai Marina leisure and residential development; $1.6 billion Festival City mixed-use development; further phases of the Dubai Internet City and Media City; and the new Convention Centre at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

In addition, Emaar Properties is developing the Emirates Hills/Emirates Lakes into a massive residential new town, and Majid Al Futtaim has a massive shopping mall and indoor ski resort under construction on a nearby site.

Around the Gulf region shopping malls are under construction all over the place. But for now the focus of building activity is Dubai , and all these new offices, homes and hotels will need furniture and interior design. In 2003, the value of building projects under construction in the UAE were estimated at $28 Billion. The projects include new high-rise commercial/residential districts, hotels, houses, hospitals, schools, universities, public parks, large shopping centers, beach resorts, man-made residential islands, the massive expansion of the airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi , and other commercial premises.

The World of Islands (USD 4 billion)
Construction of a central tourist centre, in the form of coastal islands. Hotels, apartments and leisure facilities will be erected on each island. The individual islands will be laid out so as to give the shape of a world map. Each island will be of a different size and will have a theme suitable to the country it represents. This project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.

China Town (USD 650 million)
Involves the construction of 25 buildings, office buildings, a shopping centre, apartments, hotels and entertainment facilities. This construction project measures approximately 357,167 m2 in overall size.
   
Two Palm Islands (USD 6 billion)
The construction of two islands in the shape of a palm tree. Palm Jumeira (5km long) and Palm Jebel Ali. Almost 2,000 villas, 40 luxury hotels, 2 sea and water theme parks will be constructed on the islands. In addition, there will be bridges, tunnels, shopping centres and entertainment centres. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2007.

Wellness and hydrotherapy centre (USD 120 million)
The Belhoul Group, jointly with the French company Accor, is building the first wellness and hydrotherapy centre in the gulf region on the "Palm Jumeira" artificial island. This sanatorium complex, will which cost around USD 120 million, will include some 400 rooms. The project is being built on an area of about 20.000 m 2. The Sanatorium is scheduled to open at the end of 2005.
   

Dubai Lost City Project (USD 165 million)
Construction of a 5-star hotel (340 bedrooms) over an area of 72.000 m2. This project involves, among other things, the construction of an artificial rain forest of waterfalls.
   

Gardens Shopping Mall (USD 200 million)
This new shopping centre is due for completion by 2004. It is divided into five different theme zones (Morocco, Egypt, Iran, India and China). It will cover a total area of 501,660 m2. The project developer is Nakheel Properties.
   

Dubai Pearl

The Dubai Pearl is a 20-million square feet project overlooking the Palm Jumeirah. It will offer an combination of convenicence, luxury stability and technology. Four iconic towers, international retail and dining options and five star hotels are among the attractions of the project and the aim of the developers, Dubai Pearl FZ LLC aim to create a walkable city within dubai and the plans takes into account energy efficiency. When completed Dubai Pearl will be the home of 9000 residents and 12 000 employees and the location will be a truly global destination where the best in entertainment, dining, shopping, playing, working, hospitality and living are on offer.

Hydropolis Hotel (USD 500 million)
This is the first underwater hotel in the world, featuring a marine-research laboratory, conference rooms, a plastic-surgery clinic, balneological facilities, 220 hotel rooms and various offices covering 107,700 square metres and will be built just offshore of Dubai. Completion was expected in 2006 at a cost of US$500 million. However due to engineering difficulties this project is on hold until further notice.

Burj Dubai
Planned to be the tallest building in the world and with a shopping mall at 3.6m square feet is larger than the Mall of America in Minneapolis. The mall will be completed by the end of 2006. It will include 25 high-rise buildings. This is a unique central location in Dubai and competes with anything in New York and Chicago. Dubai International Airport
DIA is also undergoing a US$4.1 billion re-development, Emirates airlines recently announced a US$12.5 billion order with Airbus for 41 wide-bodied jets to cater for the flow of traffic and influx of visitors. When one looks at the amount of people that travel through Dubai Airport each year, it is hard to believe that they did exist without the new terminal, while it is still very busy, it makes you wonder where all these people came from. The terminal is huge and quite modern featuring more duty free shopping, Emirates Business and First Class lounges as well as many new gates and yet passengers are still chartered to and from flights from buses.

The Burj Dubai also know in Arabic as the " tower of Dubai " is a skycrapper currently under construction, since April 15, 2005. Its exact final height remains a closely-guarded secret, but is believed to go well beyond the estimated 750 metres and is estimated to have 200 habitable floors, which would make it have almost twice as many floors as that of the Sears Tower, Chicago which currently has the highest number of habitable floors (108).Expected to be completed in 2008, the Burj Dubai is a formidable threat to other bids to the title of world's tallest structure. The Burj Dubai's developer Emaar Properties has suggested that the Burj Dubai will become the tallest manmade structure of any kind in history. Once completed, the peak of the tower is said to be visible from a distance of 90 km (60 miles).The tower is designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, who also designed the Sears Tower and the Freedom Tower. The design of Burj Dubai is derived from the geometries of the desert flower, which is indigenous to the region, and the patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at each element in an upward spiraling pattern, decreasing the cross section of the tower as it reaches toward the sky. At the top, the central core emerges and is sculpted to form a finishing spire. A Y-shaped floor plan maximizes views of the Persian Gulf.The interior will be decorated by Giorgio Armani. An Armani Hotel (the first of its kind) will occupy the lower 37 floors. Floors 45 through 108 will have 700 private apartments in 64 floors (which, according to the developer, sold out within eight hours of going on sale). Corporate offices and suites will fill most of the remaining floors, except for a 123rd floor lobby and 124th floor indoor/outdoor observation deck. The spire will also hold communications equipment. An outdoor infinity-edge swimming pool will be located on the 78th floor of the tower.It will also feature the world's fastest elevator, at 18 m/s (40 mph).The Burj Dubai has been designed to be the center of a large-scale, mixed-use development that will include 30,000 homes, 9 hotels, 6 acres of parkland, 19 residential towers, and 12 hectare Burj Dubai Lake. The complete development will cost about US$ 8 billion. Once completed, the tower will cover a total of 2 million m² (22 million ft²) of development. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, founder and chairman of Emaar remarked:
"This region is way behind all the regions of the world, except sub-Saharan Africa. There's no time to stop, the world is so advanced compared to us, we've been sleeping for so long."
While non-nationals cannot own real-estate in the UAE, condominiums in the Burj Dubai will work around this law by selling "lifetime" leases - reportedly up to 99 years in length.

The Dubai Mall is a giant mall scheduled to be built in Dubai, by Emaar properties, as part of the 'New Dubai' project. This mall claims to be the largest mall in the world when completed. It will cover a total area of more than 12 million ft², with 10-15 individual smaller malls built inside it, consisting of 9 million ft² of shopping retail space (comprising of a total of more than 1000 stores).
